Section IV: Competition - Small Bore (.22)
A.
General
1.
Categories:
a) Competition will be in seven categories: Production Single
Shot (PSS), Production Semi-Automatic (PA), Revolver (R),
Standing (S), Unlimited (U), Unlimited Standing (US), and
Unlimited Any Sight (UAS). At the Match Director's option,
the Production Single Shot and Production Semi-Automatic
categories may be combined into a single Production category.
The letters in parentheses are official abbreviations for
each category. Notice of combining the Production Single
Shot and Production Semi-Automatic categories must be printed
in the IHMSA News match schedule.
b) Production handguns may only compete in one Production category,
based on its action type. There is one exception; revolvers may compete in any category
after first being fired in its own category.
c) Any action type may be used in the Unlimited categories.
d) The Standing category may be fired with any firearm meeting the
specifications for a Production handgun (see Section IV-C, below)
e) The Unlimited Standing category may be fired with any firearm
meeting the specification for an Unlimited handgun (see Section IV, C-2, below).
f) If a competitor chooses to use an open sighted handgun in the
Unlimited Any Sights category and use the same handgun in the Unlimited category, the
Unlimited category must be fired first.
2. Classification: Each category will be divided into classes per
the break points specified for like categories in Big Bore (see Section III-A-2). The
three Small Bore Production categories (Single Shot, Semi-Automatic, and Revolver) will be
the same as Big Bore Production categories (Production and Revolver). Small Bore Standing
will be the same as Big Bore Standing. Small Bore Unlimited will be the same as Big Bore
unlimited. Small Bore Unlimited Standing will be the same as Big Bore Unlimited Standing.
Small Bore Any Sights will be the same as Big Bore Any Sights.
At matches in which the Production Single Shot and Semi-Automatic
categories are combined, the higher classification shall be used for competitors holding
classifications in both categories.
B. Targets:
1. Targets shall be 3/8 scale of "full size" silhouettes, per official IHMSA
templates for Small Bore competition.
2. Distances for targets shall be:
a) chickens - 25 yards (or meters)
b) pigs - 50 yards (or meters)
c) turkeys - 75 yards (or meters)
d) rams - 100 yards (or meters)
All targets must be set by the same unit of measure (yards or
meters). The unit of measure used shall be posted at the match and stated in all match
announcements. A two yard/meter, plus or minus, variation in actual distance from the
firing point to each bank of targets is allowed.
3. Targets are to be made from 3/16" or 1/4" steel plate,
or nearest metric equivalents.
4. The "feet" upon which the silhouettes rest should be
made from the same type and thickness of steel as the targets. The "feet" shall
be welded to the targets per the official templates.
5. Automated target systems are permitted. (See Section III-B-8)
C. Handguns:
1. Production:
a) A pistol or revolver that is or was a catalog item on or before January 1, 1979, and
readily available to the general public. Barrel length not to exceed 10-3/4" by
manufacturer's specifications. Weight not to exceed 4 pounds, unloaded with magazine. The
gun must be complete at all times in form, finish, and mechanical function as
manufactured. Only parts which are manufacturers' catalog items for the particular model
may be used for repair or replacement. Sights must be as furnished by manufacturer and may
not be altered. The original sights (front, rear or both) may be replaced with sights
which are catalog items manufactured to fit the handgun without alteration to the sights
or handgun. Replacement sights may not extend the original sight radius by more than
1". Covered rear sights and sight tubes are not allowed.
Note: Grandfather clause: The Browning Buckmark .22 cal. pistol with
covered rear sight is allowed as previously approved.
Small Bore Production categories shall include:
-All .22 pistols of a standard make as manufactured in the USA
-All .22 pistols manufactured elsewhere which conform to criteria and specification of UIT
rules for Sport Pistol and Standard Pistol, and all other IHMSA rules and criteria.
b) If a muzzle brake is used, it must be included in the barrel
length measurement. If it is optionally removable as manufactured, and removing it allows
the gun to qualify under the barrel length rule, then the gun may be used without said
muzzle brake.
c) Bolt action guns will not be allowed in any Small bore Production
category.
d) Adjustable grips as provided by the manufacturer on UIT pistols
are allowed. However, no adjustment of such stocks is allowed after the competitor has
begun a course of fire. No other adjustable grips are allowed.

responsibility of determining the acceptability for competition and category of any
handgun and/or accessory manufactured after January 1, 1979.
2. Unlimited: The rules for Small bore (.22) Unlimited shall be the
same as Big Bore Unlimited guns as specified in Section III-C-2. All Free pistols are
classed as Unlimited guns providing they comply with other IHMSA Unlimited rules.
D. Cartridge:
Only .22LR rimfire ammunition will be used for Small Bore competition, and must be
fired as manufactured.
